The phoenix is a mythical sacred fire bird. It is described as a bird with a colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet (or purple, blue, and green according to some legends). It has also been described as looking like a giant, firey peacock. It has a 500 to 1000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again. The new phoenix is destined to live as long as its old self. In some stories, the new phoenix embalms the ashes of its old self in an egg made of myrrh and deposits it in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis (literally "sun-city" in Greek).
I feel, with this the biggest break in the podcast, like a phoenix rising from the flames... I've been away locked in mental hospitals for the past few months and it hasn't been fun.... just been keen to get back and get on top of my music.... This mix is a bit rusty but a nice start back with lots of fresh vocals and some flaming hot tunes.

Well - Summer is finally here... We had a steaming hot end of May and into June, jubilee weekend was pretty horrible but let's hope that this year proves hot... Lots of barbecues and beach trips. I'll be off to the best surfing beach, here in Wales, Llangenith Sands, on the Gower Peninsula, as often as possible... There's been a bit of a delay in getting this latest mix together as I've been busy enhancing the Wez G studio, spending over £4000 on it in the past month... I've been learning how to use all the new gadgets and this has sidetracked me from doing DJ mixes... Well - It's been a busy week... My new Native Instruments Maschine turned up and I've been busy learning that - the aim is to develop my digital DJing to incorporate Maschine eventually and it should certainly revolutionise the Wez G production methods also... Apart from that I've been busy researching on ancestry dot com and managed to trace my lineage back to James I of Scotland... It's an amazing and addictive fun site - well worth a go... A few years ago I underwent an Ayahuasca session and was induced into the world of shamanism. It was great except for the plant taking complete control of your body and mind proved a bit daunting around six months later when I had a flashback from my experience and trekked up into the local woods where I had an alien abduction experience. I was surrounding by probing Chinese Red Army soldiers inspecting my body and faced an attack of flying red dragons. I eventually returned intact from the forest, leaving a trail of floating light beings in my wake. As far as alien abudctions go I think that sometimes in today's music technology world, surrounded by weird bits of kit and flashing lights, the modern DJ is essentially flying a spaceship through the boundaries of the dimensions. I hope that this little mix will trancendentally induce you into the weird and wacky world of Wez G and that you yourselves might experience an enlightening moment or two upon your travels. Back in my (younger) clubbing days I can remember watching a drug awareness video. They put a load of rats in a box, gave some of them speed which caused them to run around crazily hyperactive. The ones they gave ecstasy also sped up, but ran around the box edges in nice neat continuous circles. The E'd up Rats were following one of the most basic of symmetrical desires. This mix has a nice circular flow to the beats. I'm not equating my audience with rodents, far from it;. Enjoy the full force of dance music as its supposed to feel, just remember not to touch any cheese or you might get electroshocked!

Frosty blue is a chillout mix, the 50th set in the Wez G DJ Mix series. We've had a mild winter though the frost is starting to bite right now. In Caldicot, where Wez G is based, only the River severn separates him from the hippest of chill towns, Bristol. It is the frosty blue of the river that keeps the muffled sounds of Massive ATtack from rising out constantly and you can even see Portishead from across the water. Jacking your body has always been a part of house music and this mix has a few 'Jack' references. My own interpretation of the required picture and actual mix name comes from one of my greatest Christmas presents back in the day. Jack Attack was the essential game for the Commodore 64 and as little red Jack you could hop about platforms and squash baddies. What it has to do with house-jacking God only knows... The mix flows about with some nice upfront deep techy tunes, cut up rather rustily due to my break from the decks in recent months, but culminating nicely in some lush hammered-out Inner City Vocals. The best time for dance music in my opinion was the early 1990s. It was the heyday of the Rave Scene and dancefloors were packed with sky high dancing bods. The reason I like this period is not that the floors were filled with ecstasy takers, but that the music was at its peak. Dubby loops of bass and funk with a constant circular rhythm in the tents and clubs drove the E'd up crowd into a frenzy. The beats suited the experience of everyone - It was total unity and I think that over the years as the government has killed off the scene with various parliamentary acts (eg Criminal Justice Act 1994) and the total media frenzied attack on ecstasy, claiming it killed you, and the general shift towards commercialism and business, moved the music towards a different direction. Of course, post 1997 - even the dealers were selling ketamine and calling it ecstasy...It's as if the disco biscuits disappeared overnight. I think on the music front the DJs forgot the buzz which caused the whole vibe and we saw a scattering of genres and pigeonholing and musical snobbery... Well - a couple of decades on from that and digging about on Beatport, I noticed a trend back towards the old style music. Loops of bass hooks and that driving groove have reappeared. It's that old Italian sound which is so inspiring. Now most of it seems to be categorised as techno or deep house... but it seems the same old stuff that DJs from Laurent Garnier to Easygroove, from Carl Cox to Sasha, all used to bang out.
In this mix I've cut up a few old tracks with the new flavours plus slipped in a special edit from a live Universe Rave that took place only a few miles away from me in Magor in South Wales in the summer of 1992...
In the news recently there have been claims that Ecstasy cures cancer 100% guaranteed so maybe the pop idol generation will be ditching X-Factor, slipping on their shiny shirts and getting back to a diet of disco biscuits... Who knows? As long as good music thrives and Simon Cowell goes bankrupt I don't mind one little bit.

It's been a long summer and there's been a break in my regular mixes. Anyway I'm back with a bang and keen to 'Free The Planet'. Watching the news here in the UK over the past year or so and I am detecting a disturbing pattern of police brutality and the erosion of our fundamental human rights. George Orwell's '1984' warns of a 'Big Brother' society where every thought is monitored and people punished for the most minor of detours from the authorities' policies. To me house music represents freedom. The feeling of unity you can only experience in the middle of the dancefloor gives people breath and helps you to evade the oppression of our masters. I don't want everyone to listen to this and go out smashing the windows in JJB Sports for some new trainers in a violent orgy of looting. Just turn on the speakers, enjoy what (good) summer weather we have left and chill to the sounds of liberty.

Global Communication has never been more open... In the past decade we have experienced a worldwide internet revolution that has widened our horizons more than ever before. At the touch of a button you can meet and speak to people on the other side of the planet via the multitude of ever-expanding social networks. DJs have to take advantage of this great leap forward and broadcast to the wide world. It's a weird phenomenon, recording a little DJ Mix, clicking a few buttons and then getting feedback from an audience that you don't see in reality, that usually comes from an completely different civilization and way of life. The songs included on this mix seemed to me to have a lovey dovey theme and feel so hence the title 'True Romance'. Deep and funky, it flows nicely, with stand out tracks from Glimpse and Vincenzo and obviously the opening classic from A Man Called Adam. A solar flare is a sudden brightening observed over the Sun surface, which is interpreted as a release of a massive amount of energy. Here in the UK we are experiencing a great deal of sunshine and warmth which is unusual for this time of year. When I release a DJ Mix across the internet I picture listeners tuned in on their ipods as they go about their day to day lives, all across the world... For this mix there is a certain mellow ambience and I could see people tuning in as they walk through a nice park, soaking up the natural surroundings while they get into the deep groove I've created. This is a nice groovy deep house DJ mix. I'm keen to embrace DJ technology and having made the transistion to Traktor I'm trying to push myself to the limits as a creative DJ. I decided to utilise 4 Traktor FX on mix and also use the full four decks available. I synched everything up with two MIDI devices: A Vestax VCM-100 mixer and an AKAI APC-40, custom edited for decks 3&4 and the FX. To do 4 decks at once is quite a challenge and not many can carry it off; Carl Cox, perhaps, being the notable exception. For most of the mix it's only two decks, but on occasion I brave 3 and at one stage (when the Wez G tune is dropped) we have the full four decks playing. Deep House is a style which is quite minimal and works well with a lot going on technically, though I intersperse the deep tunes with some nice housey vocals. It was a challenge to record this and although far from perfect I enjoyed making it. Hope you manage to 'Get Your Groove On!'

A few years ago I went Island hopping in the South Pacific... It's great fun, a perfect paradise... This soundtrack is ideal for lazing away on a yacht, checking into the beaches, diving in coral reefs and catching a bit of surf... OK - It is winter, but in the South Pacific it's always hot and Snow White Winter Chill (my previous chillout mix) was received well so I thought it about time to treat you to some more mellow vibes... There are sounds across the board with Bristol represented by Portishead, Thievery Corporation and Röyksopp among the big guns, and a Chris Rea bootie chucked in also... It hops from a calm 90bpm up to a full flow 132 bpm, towards the end. It's a perfect soundtrack to the start of your weekend as you prepare to go out somewhere nice. ‘… one night we suddenly went mad together again; we went to see Slim Gaillard in a little Frisco nightclub. Slim Gaillard is a tall, thin Negro with big sad eyes who’s always saying ‘Right-orooni’ and ‘How ’bout a little bourbon-arooni.’ In Frisco great eager crowds of young semi-intellectuals sat at his feet and listened to him on the piano, guitar and bongo drums. When he gets warmed up he takes off his undershirt and really goes. He does and says anything that comes into his head. This is a blast from the past. I recorded it in November 2005 though it contains tracks from much earlier. I named the mix after the massive waves that roll into Tahiti which lays claim to being the place where surfing began. It recreates part of the six hour set I did when I played at Tikisoft in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia. It was a perfect day. The sun was shining. I went swimming with the sharks and stingrays in the morning and then got stuck into the island's decks for a marathon set. The mix is summery and reflects the sounds of one of the earth's best untouched paradises. House Music. It's a global groove...

This mix is a little different to usual. I've been having some Ableton lessons from DirtBox Crew ( http://artist.to/dirtboxcrew ) who play Spiral Tekno & Drum n Bass. I thought it would be nice to whack one of their tunes into the podcast... Trouble is - I usually play about 130bpm house and their music is 180bpm, so there's a few pitch shifts in this mix. Goes from house to Techno to drum n bass and ends with some nice old skool hardcore. Camembert is made from unpasteurised cow's milk, and is ripened by the moulds Penicillium candida and Penicillium camemberti for at least three weeks. It is produced in small rounds, about 350 grams (.55 lb) in weight, which are then typically wrapped in paper and packaged in thin wooden boxes. When fresh, it is quite crumbly and relatively hard, but characteristically ripens and becomes softer and strongly flavoured as it ages.

Shuffle are always at the cutting edge of house music. Here we have created a new genre ‘Taliban House’. My boss who sidelines in tech warfare is off to Afghanistan on a sortie in a couple of weeks so I thought I’d prepare him for the trip and give him something to play in the helicopters and humvees. He’s been blown up four times in Iraq and I know Afghanistan is pretty damn dangerous so I thought I’d prepare him properly with a fired up mix. During the first gulf war, Iraqi troops at the front line were tortured with incredibly loud renditions of Bruce Springsteen – Born in the USA. I’m hoping that the Wez G Taliban House will go down a bit better with the enemy and maybe help bring peace to the region. They might lay down their arms and get grooving in the caves. Who knows? It’s worth a try. Look out for a Wez G Shuffle gig at Bagram Army base in the very near future…

Well - thanks for all tuning into the podcasts. In the three weeks they've been active here there's been over 500 downloads and people from all over the world are getting shuffled up to the underground sounds of South Wales. I thank you all for this. On April 12th at Mi Casa, The club with no name, Cardiff, I'll be warming up for the legend that is Graeme Park. Graeme cut a career in house music at the pearly wheels in the Haçienda, Manchester, a nightclub at the cutting edge of the creation of the global movement that is Acid House. Before I even started DJing some of the earliest tapes I listened to were those of Graeme Park, Mike Pickering , John Dasilva and Tom Wainwright, the Haç rezzies. To say they're an influence is an understatement so I'm all excited about DJing with Mr Park in cardiff.

Well, Dion, Here is your nineties house. Classics are hard to define. bearing in mind my age means that I missed the really early stuff, I tried to include on this mix lots of stuff from when the Haçienda was still open and also in the fairly vocal style of Graeme Park.
I'll let rip with any other special requests, so listeners please give feedback. Please excuse the record jumps on the mix as some of the tunes are quite old. i didn't think the skips harmed the set that much so I uploaded it anyway...

About 18 months ago I was walking along the street in my local village in South Wales when I felt a large snake's skull on the back of my head. I have occasional Shamanic experiences. I couldn't get the thing off me and went on a bit of a mad journey where I went off several huge cliffs into some serpent nests and in a shamanic state, to help me out, I linked up with some other medecine men across the globe. I ended upin an African tribal village where they chopped the head off the snake but the guy who did it warned me that the thing would stay with me for a while. So I thought I'd revert to the beat of the drum and try and drive the damn thing out with a nice session on the wheels of steel. Have a listen and do battle with the reptile with me. Whack it with a stick or something... (By the way - WEZ G IS NUTS!) But I speak the truth, honestly!!! In my world it never gets dark...

I said I'd pepper the podshow with the occasional mix from the vaults. This is a rare occasion when I dug out the minidisc player and managed to record a Wez G live set. the venue is Journeys, Cardiff, the night , Mi Casa, the year 2004. It was a peak time mix and the crowd were having it!!! There is no track listing. I remember that my set starts with an Eddie Amador track on Yoshitoshi and finishes with an old Q:Dos classic, Nocturnal Spirit... Good times.... Enjoy!
